| The main study is a programme of the Cardiff Foundation of Environmental Research that is funded through Entrust under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme, with a number of partners (bottom of page) funding the projects directly through the credit scheme. The programmes of works are specific to site and locality and so the researchers have a unique opportunity in the preparation of data collection as they are based on the site. The two main sites are located firstly 25 miles north of Cardiff in the borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff (RCT), on a landfill site in Aberdare and secondly to the west of Cardiff in Camarthen. |
The research team currently consists of eight members, two research associates managing of the research programmes on a day to day basis and six research assistants, studying for PhD qualifications. A purpose made, modern working, research base (photo) has been established on a landfill site, which is fully equipped, so that the researchers can work efficiently and independently from both the university and the landfill site owners. A 1500M2 multi purpose building equipped with office and laboratory (photo) for simple on site analysis has also been set up in Camarthenshire to study traditional and in-vessel composting techniques. |
The
programme centers around sustainable waste management in energy &
the environment.
Public opinion and experience in the field shows that there is
a desire to find a solution to the growing problem of using landfill to
house large amounts of domestic and industrial waste. These four studies
will hope to add some insight into the numerous alternative processes
and markets available to deal with this valuable commodity. The areas
under study are energy from waste processes, composting techniques and
life cycle assessments. To date research findings have been presented
at numerous seminars and conferences (poster)
and also published in waste management journals.
